From Maps to Metaphors; The Pacific World of George Vancouver, Edited by Robin Fisher and Hugh Johnston

"George Vancouver came to the Pacific to gather scientific information, but he was not simply a collector of data.  His account of his voyage, and even his meticulous maps and charts of the northwest coast of North America, reflected his personality and his culture.  He saw and observed according to the limits of his vision.  And then, almost immediately, Vancouver's information was used, and misused, by other to develop their own conceptions of the Pacific world.   In this process of vision and revision, Vancouver's maps have been made into metaphors."
